Legend of the Three Caballeros, Episode Six: "Stonehenge Your Bets"

In ancient times...hundreds of years before the dawn of his'try...wait, did Leopold TALK before now? I feel like that's an new thing. Weird.

Well, as you know, this is the one where they go through a portal in Stonehenge to Goblin Land. I like the doorbell sound that the portal makes. "As long as they're leaderless, they're not a threat," Xandra says, and inevitably, hey, there's Gellfrake and Deldshoose. Our heroes are thrown in Goblin Jail, and yeah, the song put a smile on my face. The more elaborate the musical numbers, the better, is my feeling.

Large beast is summoned. Large beast is defeated via...pathos (I must disagree with the nomenclature here; making it all heart-warmed is by no means the same as "breaking its heart)? Endearing small goblin Worm (ne Vomit) becomes king...hooray.

I don't know; did I like it as much as the last one? Probably not; there was plenty to like, but it did feel a bit more peril-of-the-week-y. Also, I could have done without the goblin drooling and/or vomiting on Xandra's head, not to mention the fart jokes. Still, it is unpretentiously entertaining. Not all Up Itself like the last Ducktales episode. I could gladly go on watching this stuff. And, uh, I will!

  1. This is one of my favorite episodes. Love the musical number, love the telenovela running joke/theme (which helps ground José and Panchito in Latin American culture), love the friendly goblin Worm. I'm OK with the vomit/fart humor because goblins. (This is the only episode in which such humor occurs.) I liked the cute hamster as extreme anti-goblin weaponry. I think the story manages to have Love/Friendship win out over Evil/Violence without getting sentimental at all, keeping things surprising and funny. I thought the "breaking its heart" language made sense in the context of the telenovela theme; the melodramatic stories will include rivalry in romance, tragedy, etc. all saturated with feeling, and they will often be heartbreaking (at sad or happy moments). In a good way.

Okay, now you're just doing it to spite me.

  3. Yhe, the the toilet humor is the only thing that stoped this one from making it trully perfect

I reclall some writer colleague of mine once was trying to lecture me how is this "smart and fart" rule, that for every low-brow joke you write one truly clever and the things will even self out. Well, fine, that's how "South Park" often do it and it works fine there but... My question is, why not just stick to the "smart" part? Why to low yourself to the Lowest Common Denominator or how do you call it English.

But any way, this episode had some great colors, humor, singing (I esepcialy love how theatrical Jose was doing his parts), was a cute adventure and it's nice to see some real conflict between the Caballeros. It's not just Panchito and Jose being nice to Donald all the time, they can get annoyed with him to. It was cute and heart warming despite all the wacky irony.

    1. Toilet humor can be clever. The issue with it is that all too often people confuse just inserting a fart sound in for a joke and forget to actually tell a joke.
I didn't find it superfunny in this ep but it fit in well enough that i didn't feel like the writer thought putting in a fart on it's own constituted a joke.

    2. I mean the episode *is* about a land of hidious gobblins so it sort-of feals in place.

I agree - while usualy I can't stand farts and snot I usualy very "forgiving" if the joke is in fact good/clever. I never got the point of comedy which is simply making something that is gross out for the sake of being gross out.

  5. Actually, about the "breaking it's heart not being the same as heartwarming it" thing, I think that the initial "We have to break it's heart" comment was meant to be a misunderstanding, note that their original efforts to do this by fighting only made it more powerful, whereas it only was defeated when they made up.
